Reading: Days 1&2

Who:

Brothers that is Corinthian brothers in Christ, Death is personified and is given “who” like traits, Jesus Christ, and God our Father are mentioned

What:

Paul is saying that this body as we know it is likely going to die. and even if we don’t. When Christ Returns to take us to be with him in the air we will all be changed. Our bodies will inseome way be transformed from mortal to immortal. Only then will we have final and complete victory over death until then we live under the promise of that day.

Where:

Paul is writing to Corinth this is stated in the first chapter of 1 Corinthians.

When:

No indication given in this passage.

How:

The translators translate the word Musterion as “mystery” in the NIV text and I think this word sums up the how for us. It is an unknown mystery how this resurrection and ultimate victory over death will happen. What we do know is this:

Both the dead and the living saints will be “changed”

For the living the change will happen in an instant compared to the twinkling of an eye it will be so fast it will go unnoticed by most.

For the dead they will be raised with new bodies made to last forever.

The change for the living will come after the change for the dead.

Cultural Cues:

Other than the ongoing Jewish debate over resurrection that even Jesus battled when he raised Lazarus from the dead, there are not cultural cues.

Literary Vehicles Used:

Comparisons/Contrasts:

None.

Anthropomorphism:

None.

Similes/analogies:

In our reading Death and its sting are used both literally and as metaphors. Death is literally death but the sting is a metaphor for the pain of death also it is a metaphor for the sin that causes death and paul goes on to say that the power of the sting of death comes from the law.

Hyperbole:

Paul uses an emotional crescendo to expose in each of us the ache for immortality. The bible says in another place that eternity is bound up in our hearts. God has put it in our hearts to live forever. Like Paul says earlier in this chapter… “These bodies are only seeds, a small part of what we will become. We all want eternity Paul challenges us here to believe it is possible, to believe there will be victory over death.

Repetitions:

4 times in this chapter Paul mentions that the perishable must be replaced by the imperishable. Earlier in the chapter he uses the metaphor of a seed being buried and dying to become something new.

Allusions to other points or pieces in scripture:

Paul quotes Hosea 13:14.

Cross References:

Philippians 3:20-21 – Our bodies will be transformed and this passage sheds some additional light on the splendor of our new bodies. Our new bodies will be like his glorious body.

Hebrews 2:14-15 – This passage reinforces that God in his mercy freed us from any rational fear of death. We know there is a resurrection and because of this death has indeed lost its sting.

Life Application strategy: Day 7

Using S.P.E.C.S. write how you intend to apply this passage to your life:\

Sins to confess:

1. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit
2. Consider others better than yourself

Promises to trust:

If we humble ourselves he will lift us up!

Examples to follow:

Jesus – He was God down to his very nature. But didn’t grasp at being God instead He set that aside and became a man. He sat aside so much so that He could be with us. He humbled himself and so must we.

Commands to obey:

1. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit
2. Look not only to your own interests but also to the interests of others.

Stumbling blocks to avoid:

Selfish ambition and vain conceit.

How will you make yourself accountable:

As I have considered how, that is, in what particular way to apply this passage I have seen that a thought repeated, not necessarily within the passage but this thought is emerging as important with in my notes and likely with in my own life. This is what has emerged for me as most important:

Philippians 2:3-4

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.

Selfish ambition and vain conceit are stumbling blocks to avoid. We are at least admonished if not commanded to do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. And finally I must confess I have lived much of my life out of selfish ambition and vain conceit. It is time for it all to stop. This week I will focus on this in prayer and in life. I must not be doing life for myself but for Jesus and for others.

Andy,

I died to be with you. I love you and I want you to be excellent at all you do. I love you and I want what is best for you I am so proud of you and of all that you are becoming, all that we are becoming together. I am so madly in love with you and so completely interested in every detail of your life. I am interested in you not because I need to know you but because I already do know you and I enjoy you so much. This unity, this fellowship, this love these are your encouragement and your comfort. Be filled with my tenderness and compassion – You are my treasure and I am yours.

It has been my privilege to become all that was necessary to redeem you back to myself. I love you. Go, my son and make the difference I created you to make, the difference I died for you to make.

Keep persisting in prayer. And in your pursuit of Me and My kingdom.

Oh yeah, Did I tell you that I love you? Because I do.

Your Father and your God.

Prayer: Day 5

Write your heart to God as a result of this scripture:

God,

Thank you for the intimacy we have with you. for the encouragement, comfort, and fellowship that are available in you. Thank you that you are God almighty who exalts us as we humble ourselves. Thank you that you have the power to lift us up and to answer all our prayers. You are Holy, that is you are sufficient for any task, mission, or purpose. I love you.

God, Check my motives. I want only pure motives in my pursuit of you. I want you for you and not only to be exalted by your mighty hand. May this always be true of me. I want your attitude and your character to drive my life and permeate everything that I do.

Comfort me with your love today. I need peace in my heart. Overwhelm us at first Assembly with your love so that we can become carriers to this city of your good news of love. Then overwhelm our city with your love. Then the whole of central Iowa, then the rest of the State. I pray that it would be a love revolution

Forgive me, forgive us your bride and your church for thinking of ourselves and for looking to our own interests first and giving to others out of what is left. forgive me for putting myself before my family at home. God, you are so gracious and good to us

Thank you, I love you and I give you all the glory along with all the power and Honor.

-Andy Peterson

Meditations: Days 3 & 4

Why:

I think the why, or the purpose of this passage is pretty clear. Humility. It is important to note that the author gives some idea of the source for this humility.

The encouragement we have from unity with Christ

The comfort we have from his love

The fellowship we have with his Spirit

The tenderness and compassion formed as a result

Then you are in a position to be like minded with other believers, having the same love being one in spirit and in purpose. You will be able to forgo your own interests for the interests of others you will be able to have the same attitude that was in Christ…Humility!

What Major Themes are emerging:

If we humble ourselves God will lift us up. This is evidenced in the passage in verse nine which says for this reason God also highly exalted him. The last half of this passage from verses six through eleven hinge on this one passage. Before it they lay out all the ways Christ humbled himself and then to on to end with all the ways God exalts him as a result. I think this serves as confirmation for us of the truth of the scripture that says. if we humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord he will lift us up.

Also, the attitude of Christ comes because of:

Encouragement that flows from our unity with Christ.

Comfort that exists for us in his radical love for us.

Our fellowship with the Spirit.

The tenderness and compassion that comes from encouragement, comfort, and fellowship.

I think that it is quite interesting that these “if” statements from Philippians are all tied to our intimacy with Christ and his Spirit. The attitude of Christ flows out of our own intimacy with Him. Our unity with him, his love for us and our fellowship with the Spirit produce tenderness and compassion and the ability to adopt the attitude of Christ. I think it is absolutely amazing that the more time we spend with Jesus the more we adopt his attitudes, character and overall righteousness.

What are some major Life applications:

We are to humble ourselves, considering others before ourselves.

We are to pursue encouragement, comfort and fellowship in our relationship with Jesus.

We are to consider others better than ourselves

We are to look out for the interests of others not only our own interests.

As usual there are many cross references. I have selected three to unpack here today:

Colossians 3:12 – Talks about how compassion (mentioned in v.1 of our passage) among other things is like a suit of clothes that we can put on. It stands to reason that we can slip it off as well. We need to be sure that we are walking in the light of the Kingdom of God. This runs parallel with the idea that we put on Christ, that is His character. We must seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness or his character.

Galatians 5:26 – “Selfish ambition and vain conceit” are in opposition to walking in the fruit of the Spirit according to this passage in Galatians.

Romans 12:10 – Gives added support to the notion that we are to consider others above ourselves.

Andy here, hope you are having a great Easter season, full of awesome insight into God and his word. Here are my thoughts on this weeks reading.

Meditations: Days 3 & 4

Why:

I think there are three primary reasons for this passage:

That we recognize the power of Christs substitution for us on the cross.

power to make us new

power to make us righteous

That we acknowledge that power at work in the lives of others

That we tell people about it.

What Major Themes are emerging:

I see several major themes that could each be independent studies in them selves. But I will list a brief synopsis of them here:

Jesus Died for us so we must live for him. It seems based on the way this is written that in this culture it is a given that if someone lays down his life for you you must live yours for him. There is no real option given. The understanding seems to be life for a life.

Because we live for him we must begin to recognize the newness of life granted to each of us. “We no longer regard each other according to the flesh” that is when we look at each other we think about what Christ is doing in them and how they are becoming new and we regard them according to that. I believe God wants to show us the finished product so that we can see his vision of a work in progress. We are all in the process of old things passing away and all things becoming new. Each of moves through this process at a pace we decide. God will not kill our old things until we are ready to bury them and embrace the newness he has for us.

Because we recognize that people are made new we are entrusted by God with the ministry of reconciliation. God has entrusted us with the task or imploring people to be reconciled to God.

This makes us ambassadors for the Kingdom of God. We are here as aliens negotiating a treaty with this alien people. The treaty is one of reconciliation made possible through Christ’s being mad a substitute for us on the cross.

What are some major Life applications:

The major life applications that I draw out of this are in how we treat believers and non believers. We are to regard believers no longer according to the desires and impulses of their flesh but according to the new creature God is making them into. By faith we are to call out in them the new creature who is the righteousness of God in Christ. Our words and treatment of others has tremendous power. If we treat or regard each other according to the flesh we will have a life long struggle with the flesh. But I wonder what each believers transition to the new creation would look like if we simply spoke and acted or essentially regarded each other according to the new creature. Would it be more immediate?

As it pertains to unbelievers we are to plead with them to be reconciled to God. And to explain the newness of life that is promised in Christ. We are ambassadors in relationship with this world and in relationship with Christ we are to make the introduction and explain they can be reconciled and plead with them to do it.

Hey All,

I hope you are doing great this week. I am sure things are getting tough. This is a lot of study each week. Great job for sticking with it. It is worth it. This weeks reading is over 2 Corinthians 5: 14-21. I hope you have already begun to see some powerful things emerging. You should be beginning the Meditation today. I pray God opens your eyes and heart to see and hear him as you meditate on his word.

Becoming New,
